Eating their words - Weald girls win creative book competition

Year 8 students Izzy and Mollie have grabbed first prize in a literary competition with a creation that was good enough to eat.

Their stunning cake, inspired by the bestselling Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, came first in the Young Adult Category of the South East Schools Themed Book Award "From Page to Screen".

The "Prophecy Book" Victoria sponge is surrounded by key elements from the story, such as the prophecies and main character Crowley's house plants.

Everything is edible – even the labels and the prophecies (sic) papers which are made from potato starch paper.

Congratulations too, to Year 7 students Indigo and Emily who were runners-up in the Teen category for their fantastic model (pictured below right) which was inspired by Murder on the Orient Express.

They designed a new cover and blurb from scratch. Inside are various items from the story, including the man himself Poirot, his notebook, the train conductor's button, the murder victim, red kimono, a map of the train and the ghastly murder weapon.

Well done girls and well done to all the Weald students who submitted their work to the competition.

The annual South East Schools Themed Book Award started in 2006 and includes entries  from more than 400 students throughout the region.
