On 31 March students from Year 12 and 13 Further Mathematics took a trip to the Mathematics Gallery at the Science Museum in London designed by Zaha Hadid Architects. This beautifully designed gallery filled the students with both inspiration and amazement. Students wandered through the space and saw how Mathematics connects to all features of the real world. The gallery relays stories and objects designed by mathematicians spanning over 400 years.
Huge congratulations to the Tonbridge team who came second in their heat of the National Reading Champions Quiz on 30 March at the end of last term! Beth, Levina, Tabitha, Faye and Klara put in lots of practise ahead of the quiz, really demonstrating their knowledge of books and their love of reading, and they did incredibly well. They were only three points away from the top spot and a place in the national finals.
A Message from the Students of Year 12
Trip to Oxford University 22nd March 2022.
Last week, 32 Year 12 students were given the amazing opportunity to visit University of Oxford’s new Chemistry teaching labs which are used by the undergraduates studying there. As part of the programme, we synthesised esters (a type of organic molecule) from different reactants to produce unique fruity fragrances, such as orange or strawberry; the resulting fragrance depended on the reactants we used. The experience of getting hands-on with new and advanced equipment as well as using techniques we had only previously learnt about in theory was invaluable. This included using vacuum distillation to separate liquids at lower temperatures. We also applied Infrared (IR) Spectroscopy and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Spectroscopy to analyse organic molecules in order to determine the molecular structure and purity of the esters. The expertise and friendly support from all the staff there, including our own Mrs Pons and Dr Xu, truly enhanced the experience.
Congratulations to the Sevenoaks team of Imogen, Esther, Mia, Megan and Laura, who competed in the South of England heats of the National Reading Champions quiz. They showed excellent teamwork, enthusiasm and fantastic literary knowledge and did Weald proud. The Sevenoaks team came fourth in their heat, missing the third prize by just one point, had a great time and ate a lot of snacks. Well done to all involved.
Congratulations to Sienna who competed in the Duckhurst Show Jumping competition during half term.
Our Year 8 students participated in the Faraday Challenge on 11 February. We are currently in fifth place in the overall inter-school competition.
