Married Parents have equal parental responsibility however, parental responsibility may be shared between a number of people beyond the child’s natural parents, ie step-parents, adoptive parents, guardians and carers. If parents are either separated or divorced they still continue to have parental responsibility for their child therefore they must both be named on the form unless there are special circumstances for a parent not to be named (e.g. a Court Order where a copy should be provided).

Parental responsibility can be acquired by being granted a residence order, by being an appointed guardian, by being named in an emergency protection order or by adopting a child.

A child in Public Care (Looked after Child) means a person under the age of 18 years for whom the Local Authority provided accommodation by agreement with their parents/carers or who is the subject of a care order under Part IV of the Children’s Act 1989. Children who are looked after under an agreement series of short term placements such as respite are excluded.

If a student’s parents are divorced or separated, the school must be notified in writing if your daughter/son lives during the school week at two separate addresses.
