Christina Kelsall Strikes Gold

Congratulations to Christina Kelsall in Year 13 who, on the 4 September, became the first Sainsbury’s School Games Champion of 2015 securing a gold medal for England in the under 52Kg Judo .

The competition involved 1,600 athletes from England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales, UK Dependencies and Brazil and over 12 different sports.

Christina’s weight category wasn’t included in the Team championships on the 6 September, but the Northern Ireland team were short of an under 57kg player, Christina stepped forward and fought at the heavier weight helping Northern Ireland secure bronze medals, being narrowly beaten by Scotland in the semi-finals. The England team went on to beat Scotland 8 - 0 in the final to win the Team Champions Cup.

Just to top it all, not only did England win the Team Cup but the England Squad were awarded the Overall Champions' Cup for winning the most gold medals in the individual events over the previous days. The England coaches gave this to Christina to keep permanently as they felt her performances were outstanding and by helping other teams she showed the true spirit of Judo.
