West Kent Schools Themed Book Awards

Eleven local secondary schools took part in this year’s award, with student judges starting to read the shortlisted books in October 2014 and voting for their favourites in February 2015.

This year the theme for the award was ‘Against the Odds’ and the winning books were revealed at the annual award ceremony held at Kent College, Pembury on 26 March. Twenty-one student judges from Weald attended the ceremony and enjoyed fabulous and inspiring talks from author Nicky Singer (left) and author and screen writer Andy Briggs. Many of the participating schools had also filmed ‘book trailers’ for the shortlisted books and these were shown on the evening. The Weald production was highly entertaining and the participants and Year 12 Media students who helped create it, should feel very proud.

At the end of the evening, it was revealed that ‘The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian’ by Sherman Alexie was the winner of the Teen category, with ‘Out of the Easy’ by Ruta Sepetys winning the Young Adult vote.
