PTA News - September 2014

Firstly, a very warm welcome to new parents/carers and PTA members with students in Years 7 and 12.  All parents/carers with students at WoK are automatically members of the PTA so do come along and meet us at our AGM on 25th September (for details please see the “Dates for your diary” section at the end).

STOP PRESS!

We are delighted to be able to reveal the PTA’s latest funding project, consisting of a brand new Sixth Form outdoor area, Japanese-themed Rock Garden and Bamboo Walk.  The makeover of the area was a collaborative project funded jointly by the PTA and school, with work completed during the summer break.  The Sixth Form area incorporates a weatherproof canopy, outdoor seating and patio heaters to make the space usable year round. Planters featuring Japanese Holly (Ilex Crenata) and Bamboo (Fargesia Murialae Super Jumbo) have been used to define and enhance the area.  The Rock Garden includes a raised deck with Japanese-themed bench and rock seating in blue-grey granite and is for the enjoyment of all students.  The bamboo planting extends around the Rock Garden and into a walk down towards the new Sixth Form and Exam block.  The extra seating in the Sixth Form area will free up space under the main canopy, especially during the busy lunchtime period.

Our thanks to:  Ailles Landscaping (Bamboo Walk and decking), Arnold Tarmac (Tarmac), UK Bamboo (Bamboo), Clovis Canopies (canopy), Ash Worcester (carpentry and staircase cladding), Taylormade Planters (Planters), Rhino Rock (Granite seating, rocks, Japanese Holly, planting of planters) and of course the entire Premises Team at WoK.  Finally, thank you to all of our supporters who have helped to raise funds for this great enhancement.

We are very pleased to announce that the new four-screen video wall in the foyer has been donated by the PTA.  The screens will be used to provide highly visible information for students as well as showcasing activities at WoK.  The students have been thrilled to see themselves in action on the big screen and it has created quite a buzz in the fabulous new foyer.  Thank you to all of our supporters who have helped to raise funds for this high-tech enhancement.

A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to the Phil The Bag collection.  Over 1 tonne of recycling was donated, raising over £500.  The next collection week will be in October, please continue to collect all unwanted items, including all clothing, school uniform, hats, shoes, belts, handbags, and household textiles including sheets, pillow cases, duvet covers, curtains and towels.

Quiz Night Review 9th MayOur second quiz night of the school year was yet again another success. The support of the parents, staff and governors attending this event is vital and is very much appreciated by the PTA. It was led by our popular Quiz masters with prizes for the winning team and the traditional wooden spoons for the losers.  The Ploughman’s Supper was well received and the compliments were very kind...Thank You.
We held a raffle which had a good range of prizes from Champagne and chocolates to BBQ gloves and aprons. If that wasn’t enough we had “Guess the sweets in the jar” and “Heads or Tails,” which added to the fun of the evening, along with a stocked bar...what more could one want?!!! Thanks to you all for making this evening ....FUN.....

Q: What will the PTA serve at the next quiz?  A: You will have to come along and find out.

Empties Please - old ink cartridges for WOK PTA!
Please deposit filled bags in the collection box located in Reception.  Additional bags are available from Reception.

Uniform Shop
The PTA School Uniform Shop has seen many improvements over the past year including weekly opening, a mobile shop and the option of receiving 30% cashback on donated uniform sold. Although this has led to the increased popularity of the shop, it has also resulted in a far more complicated accounting process. Accordingly the PTA has taken the decision that refunds and exchanges are no longer possible. We would therefore advise parents purchasing uniform for existing students to ensure their daughter is present to try garments on prior to purchase. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.
